Bono, my tyres are dead! Lewis Hamilton opens up on relation with race engineer, Peter Bonning

Lewis Hamilton is widely regarded as one of the greatest racers to grace the Formula One grid. The 7-time World Champion has won 103 races 103 pole positions and 182 podium finishes across his career, the highest by a driver.

One of the greatest skills Lewis has been recognised for is managing his tyres and understanding the tyre degradation of his racecar. And sometimes the Brit has anticipated his tyres even when fans consider his tyres to be alright! The infamous call “Bono, my tyres are dead!” are a testament to his anticipation.

While many consider Hamiton to be bluffing other teams by announcing his tyres are gone, the World Champion shard what is going on in his mind. He also shared about his relationship with Race Engineer Peter “Bono” Bonnington.

Lewis Hamilton says relation with race enineer “like a marriage”

Lewis will face off against Max Verstappen in the 2022 season. The duo shared an epic duel for the 2021 title where the Dutchman pipped the Briton to win his maiden title in the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi. The British F1 Driver talked about his experience with CrowdStrike in an interview featuring Danny Hornigold and George Kurtz, CrowdStrike CEO.

Hamilton when asked about his relationship with Bono said “Bono is my longest engineering partner. He has had some difficult moments though his journey and we have been there. The ups and downs bring us closer. Sometime’s we get frustrated with each other, it’s like a marriage I guess. But we work it out and keep pushing”

When asked about the infamous radio message, Hamilton chuckled “Sometimes, the worst thing is that you bluff your own team. So you have to be careful with that. It’s a very fine line because the other teams are listening to what you are saying. There have been times when it worked in benefit, but it’s a very very very fine line.”

Bonnington became senior race engineer for Lewis Hamilton ahead of the 2013 season, has been the voice guiding Lewis across all his races with the Mercedes F1 team. Bono is responsible for all trackside communications to the driver and the set-up of the Formula One car. He is widely regarded as one of the best Race engineers in F1.
